A Year in Music. A Year of Music.

Some months ago, I suggested on my primary blog fiftyyearsandcounting.wordpress.com that I would start to document my favourite tunes.  Frankly, although I started to give it some thought, I quickly realised that it was going to be particularly difficult to filter through all the tracks I like, those that I really like and those that have a special meaning in my life for one reason or another.  How many should I chose?  Could I choose only one track per artist or band?  How much justification should I provide in any preamble?  It was going to be complicated.

I shelved the idea.

Fast-forward to a few days ago and, for some reason already lost to my rapidly fading memory, I happened to come across a music video I’d not seen for a while.  I took time to watch it a few times, following which a plan began to form.  As I was approaching my 52nd birthday, I thought it would be good to celebrate with a challenge for the coming year, so I’m going to aim to add a new tune here every day for the next 52 weeks.  At this stage I have no idea whether that will be anything like enough to cover the recordings I’d like to feature, nor quite how easy it will be to add the appropriate links (in the event of anything particularly obscure), but I figure that most of what I want will be available out there somewhere.

I’ve decided not to make a list to work through.  Well, I’m bound to have some kind of mental list gradually forming in my mind, but I’m not going to write anything down.  I will post an entry and will decide on the following day’s entry at that time, keeping it as organic as possible, probably having heard something during the day to spark a memory.

Guess which track I’m going to choose by adding a comment and if you’re right I’ll add you to the wall of honour and send you a Mars bar.  I won’t change my mind if there’s a correct guess.  Honest.

The first 6 months tracks are listed here:

  1. I’m guessing something from the Smiths, possible ‘heaven knows…’, tho my personal fave is ‘what difference…’ or ‘barbarism begins at home’

Then something by Genesis, obv. Possible ‘lamb lies down’?

There’s got be be some Oasis in there too somewhere! 😉

    1. Nope. Going ‘underrated’ tomorrow. Smiths and Genesis undoubtedly somewhere along the line, but Oasis…well, you never know. I might just concede on one, but it won’t be for ages. Probably. Definitely. Maybe. (See what I did there?!)

      1. Ah, all part of your ‘Masterplan’, I guess.

I only hope that period where you went of the rails and started listening to all that dodgy dance music on radio 1 doesn’t feature. Just think what the world would be like today without 6 music!

        Field Music? Kate Bush? Blur?

    1. The band will certainly feature one day, but neither of those two tracks. I don’t dislike either of them, but they have no particular part to play (although this may change, so don’t quote me on that).

  2. Lovely idea. Look forward to listening to what you pull out of your memories bran tub! Regards from Thom at the immortal jukebox (plugged in and ready to play).
